Area residents with Green Bay mailing addresses, are encouraged to verify their address to avoid being unduly taxed by the City of Green Bay.
All vehicles registered in Green Bay (city of) will be subject to the
wheel tax starting in January 2019.
Under the wheel tax, Green Bay residents would be taxed $20 a year when registering their vehicles. The money would be used for road resurfacing and pothole maintenance. City officials estimate about 105,000 vehicles would be subject to the tax, which would add up to approximately $2.1 million in revenue per year.
The DOT is about 2 years out on developing software to properly register our personal vehicles to our geographic information system (GIS). This is important because if you have a zip code that defaults to Green Bay, WI, you may end up paying the City of Green Bay wheel tax, even if you don’t live within the boundaries of the City of Green Bay.
For example, if you live in the Village of Ashwaubenon and it says “Ashwaubenon (v)” then your info is correct. However, if you live in the Village (or some other community other than Green Bay) it may say current Vehicle Info box “Green Bay (c)”. If you don’t live in the City of Green Bay, this is not correct, and you need to change it to avoid undue auto fees.
Be aware, any person who gives a false or fictitious location where a vehicle is customarily kept may be fined not more than $200 or imprisoned not more than six months or both (section 341.60, Wis. stats.).
The wheel tax applies to vehicles kept in the City of Green Bay with:
Truck registration at 8,000 lbs. or less (except dual purpose farm)
The following special plates are exempt from wheel tax:
Collector (“Collector Special” plates are not exempt)
Ex-Prisoner of War (if issued without registration fee)
Medal of Honor
Plates issued to a farm truck, dual purpose farm truck or motor home
