The Federal Trade Commission and Better Business Bureau are now joining forces to warn companies

Business scams and identity theft are on the rise, and a new report found that scammers are targeting 28 million small businesses

and those small businesses are losing $7 billion to scams each year,

and many of these scams also apply to individuals.

The report claims scams against small-businesses are increasing, posing significant risks to small-business owners who stand to lose more money than a national chain. Scams can impact every business, regardless of location, size, or industry. There is considerable overlap between scams targeting individual consumers and those targeting small businesses which may explain why research and outreach efforts have generally been one and the same. Research suggests that scam activity directed at small businesses is growing, that these scams pose a significant risk, and that they can result in a higher monetary loss than those targeting individuals.

According to Beverly Baskin, President and CEO, Council of Better Business Bureaus, “Scams are a significant – and growing – problem for small businesses. Nearly two thirds of those we surveyed said their business had been targeted by a scammer in the past three years, and many said that their businesses suffered a loss of consumer trust as a result.

If any of the following apply to you, or your business,
